Barcelona
The Barri Gòtic ("Gothic Quarter" in Catalan)
is the centre of the old city of Barcelona. Many of the buildings
date from medieval times, some from as far back as the Roman
settlement of Barcelona. Catalan modernisme architecture (often
known as Art Nouveau in the rest of Europe), developed between 1885
and 1950 and left an important legacy in Barcelona. |
 |
Cordoba
Today a moderately sized modern city, the old town contains many
impressive architectural reminders of when Córdoba was the thriving
capital of the Caliphate of Cordoba that governed almost all of the
Iberian peninsula. It has been estimated that Cordoba, with up to
500,000 inhabitants, was the largest city in the world in the tenth
century aside from Byzantium. |
 |
Granada
The Alhambra, a famous Moorish citadel and palace, is in Granada. It is
the most remarkable item of the Muslim, Jewish, and Christian historical
legacy that makes Granada a hot spot among cultural and tourist cities
in Spain. |
 |
Seville
The city's
cathedral was built from 1401–1519 after the
Reconquista on
the former site of the city's mosque. It is the largest of all medieval
and Gothic cathedrals, in terms of both area and volume. |

The Alcazar Segovia, near Madrid, circa 1000. |
 |
The Alcázar of Segovia (literally known as "Segovia
Castle") is a stone fortification, located in the old city of Segovia, Spain.
Rising out on a rocky crag above the confluence of the rivers Eresma and
Clamores near the Guadarrama mountains, it is one of the most distinctive
castle-palaces in Spain by virtue of its shape - like the bow of a ship. The
Alcázar was originally built as a fortress but has served as a royal palace, a
state prison, a Royal Artillery College and a military academy since then.
